Patience & Perseverance (needed for any Linux/FreeBSD configuration task)
Xvidtune, included with XFree86, is usefull as well.
Download the appropriate .LIN file for your monitor.
This contains the Modelines you'll need to put into your XF86Config file.
Install Linux and Xfree86.
Run the xconfigurator.
When asked to choose video card from the list, choose "3Dlabs Oxygen GMX", or any other
"PERMEDIA 2" based card.
When asked to chose a monitor, choose "Custom".
For Horizontal Frequency, select "Monitor that does 1600x1200 @ 76Hz" (here you don't have to worry about what your monitor really does).
For Vertical Frequency (Refresh Rate) Select 50-100 Hz.
When prompted, select "Don't Probe".
When asked to choose amount of memory on video card, select "8 Megabytes or more".
Choose "No Clock Chip Setting".
For now, just choose the settings in 8-bit color, up to the actual maximum resolution of your monitor.
When asked to test, DONT - It more than likely won't work at this point.
Now you need to get the proper modelines information to put in your XF86Config file.
Edit your XF86Config file (generally contained in /etc/X11).
In the Monitor section, replace the Modelines created by the xconfigurator with the Modelines from the .LIN file you downloaded.
Double check the Screen section with the "accel" driver that it contains the resolutions you want to run. The first one in the list will be the one that X goes into by default.
Save your XF86Config file and start X Windows. You should be getting clear video.
Use Xvidtune or manually adjust parameters IF NECESSARY to adjust centering.
Your X link should be pointing to XF86_3DLabs
Please read the information available at the links below about specific info on each program/utility.
